The Wii needs a boot disk?

The guys over at Wiixors somehow managed to take a quick picture of the back of the box for the Wii. As you can see, there is a list of stuff included in the box. At the bottom of the list is a "Wii Startup Disc".

Now the internet forums are blazing in speculation that Nintendo's upcoming console may need to have its firmware installed before being able to play it.

The mystery disc could be an OS that the user needs to install first, or it may just be "Wii Sports". Its pretty strange that they didn't just call the game by its name though, so I guess we will have to wait until the system launches to figure out the entire truth.

EDIT: The disk most likely includes updates. This is because the firmware was updated after production on the Wii began.

Big deal, probably just BIOS/OS updates that were added after the chips went to manufacturing. The PS2 network adaptor came with a software disc too.

This is scaremongering plain and simple, if you actually needed to install the entire OS before being able to play anything, it would run in direct opposition to everything Nintendo has said about it being user friendly.

This way you can play it out of the box, then maybe a few patches or menu options, or updated WiFi compatibility are available for install once ppl get around to it. I'd suggest you see the Daily Show clip on the use of the question mark in headlines btw.

It is probably the Opera browser addon. They did say it would be a free download, but why not make it a free disk?

Think about the name... "Wii Startup Disk". Does it have patches and/or firmware updates on it? Maybe. More likely it is exactly what it says it is - a startup disk: a beginners guide on how to use the Wii to it's full potential.

Nintendo is going for a much broader market, and we all know what happens when Grandma decides that she wants to be hip and cool and have the latest thing - she has no idea how to use it.

My guess is that the disk is nothing more than a video and some tutorials on how to use the Wii.

I agree with Dovah, its exactly what it says, a 'start-up disc' a disc for when you first start the machine to teach you how to use it and have fancy movies and demos.

Why are people making such a big deal about htis. Have they not seen the size of the other consoles and said WTF. They just see a pice of writing that says start up disk and say "ooo, looks like this system is a piece of crap better not buy it." Peopla make to much of a big deal out of little things.

WTF? Did anyone else notice the Dolby Digital Pro Logic II logo?!

This is the first evidence I've seen of the possibility of a digital audio out!
How can anyone not be stoaked?

You've added a word that wasn't there. Digital. It's just Dolby Pro Logic II.

I like the opportunity for hacks that this suggests.

couldn't this just be the games that come with the box?

Why does everyone have 10 minute memories? Do you all honestly not remember the news just a few months ago saying that the first Wiis that were manufactured would come with a disc that had updates to the firmware? Geez. You don't have to install the freaking firmware from scratch. Honestly.

    I don't think it's a game.
Awhile back digg had a link to a site with Reggie on ABC's ahead of the curve

If you listen to Reggie about 3 minutes in starts talking about Wii Sports, and says it's packed into the Hardware, and theres no Wii Sports on the contents list
