The PS3 and Xbox 360 equal in power?

In a recent interview with the San Jose Mercury, the president of Silicon Knights, Dennis Dyak, said that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 were essentially equal in power.
"The 360 and the PS3 are equal in power in my eyes. Maybe the PS3 has more processing power. The 360 has more available memory. It's pretty much a net, net. The public perception of the PS3 was that it was much more powerful. To developers, they look even."
This is very interesting considering at the start, everyone was going on about how great the PS3 looked, but the 360 is catching up, especially with games like 'Too Human', which Silicon Knights is currently developing for the 360.
When Dyak was asked who he thought would win the next console war, he said this.
"It's a tough one. Microsoft is looking really good. Everyone is looking pretty good. At the beginning, everyone thought Sony would walk away with it. We won't know for sure for two years."
Interestingly enough, he doesn't appear to be too fond of Nintendo, since that was the only company he didn't mention. I guess he doesn't want to come "out of the closet" and support Nintendo yet.

Labels: Microsoft, Playstation 3, Sony, Xbox 360
I think he didn't mention the Wii simply because its known it is graphically inferior, which all his comment was about, graphics, nothing about controls or gameplay and so on.
What of the DVD playing ability of the PS3? I purchased an Xbox 360 with the intent of replacing my Sony DVD player and gaining the ability of streaming music and pictures from my XP machine (which is an often missed benefit of the xbox). However the Xbox really sucks as a DVD player - at least compared to my $300 DVD player which does 720p.
DVD playback on consoles will probably always be inferior to that of standalone players, just because the focus is different. $300 is almost the price of a console alone. The majority of that investment is not going to go into the DVD playback abilities as it would with a $300 DVD player.
Says the guy who's working solely for the 360...
I dont think they are totally objective. They have a Xbox360 exclusive title + what would happend if they told that the PS3 were twice as powerful or vs?
Garbage, you only have to look at the specs to see that the ps3 if far more powerfull than the 360. Ive noticed that digg only seems to have storys posted that favour wii and try to damage the ps3? Very odd!

In RAW numbers, the PS3 does "look" more powerful, but the bottom line with any console is how useable those numbers truly are. I think the point that Dyak was making is that the PS3 does have a more powerful CPU, but the extra memory on the 360 helps to close the gap.
Consider, too, that fewer titles are exclusive to a single console anymore and you can see how the PS3's superior processing numbers won't mean much. Same thing happened in the previous generation. Even though the Xbox was more powerful than the PS2, developers coded for the PS2 and made enhancements for the Xbox version. These "enhanced" versions looked a little better than the PS2 versions, but never fully exploited the full potential of the Xbox. This generation may see the same thing happen, but with Sony being the underutilized system.
Blogspam is when someone links to a blogged summary instead of the real article. You don't offer anything but a summary of the article, hence anyone linking to this entry rather than the original article is committing blogspam. And even your summary is wrong; Dyack does talk briefly about Nintendo: he says that they will live or die by how well the controller performs. So perhaps he didn't offer any original thoughts about it, but he did give them a mention.
DVDs are 480p NOT 720p, check your facts before posting garbage.
Microsoft will be shipping a HD-DVD add-on for the 360 next week. HD-DVD is 1080p.
I think PS3 and 360 are equal if look at the cpu for PS3 it's 700 mhz and 360 is 500 mhz.
but on the other side 360 can use all 512 Ram while PS3 can use only 256 Ram.
I not a fanboy to any console like some ppl and it's very sad that these people call themselves gamers.
Numbers can be very misleading. Besides raw number crunching and memory size, there are bandwidth issues, how easy/hard it is to maximize the computational capability of the system (can you keep all those cores humming), how easy/hard it is it to write code for it, how much time developers spend optimizing code for a particular platform, and so on.
And then there are all the non-visualization issues. For unique and fun playability, Wii is getting all the buzz right now. Microsoft has a good lead on the networked games, but Sony is working hard to close the gap. The popularity of the low-cost XBL Arcade games has been a bit of a surprise; it will be interesting to see if XNA provides a boost.
I think we will need to wait for the second generation PS3 (and Wii) games before anyone can make a reliable "this is better" claim.
I think people shouldn't be allowed to say that PS3 is less powerful, just because they don't understand the specs and think the 360s games are looking "prettier".
Seriously though people, who cares? Buy whichever console has the games you want to play and the functionality you want to use. Both consoles games do or will look spectacular.
To put it simply, the massive hardware flame wars are simply a by product of consumer's over-obsession with graphics and the bragging rights of having the latest and greatest.
In all practicality, you are either not going to notice the difference, or if you own a setup that will let you notice the difference you are most likely so filthy rich that you will own both consoles.
In terms of graphics PS3 and XBOX 360 are evenly matched. Remember XBOX 360 is in its second year which means that the games have had longer to improve, when it first launched the graphics were far worse than now. I personally think PS3 will be ahead of XBOX 360 in the next couple of months as the producers take full advantage of the graphic memory.
Nintendo Wii is fun, so i heard. The graphics though...SHIT!!! It cant compete graphically with either the PS3 or XBOX 360. its only advantage being a motion-sensitive rod with a lifespan of lets say 5 days.
They match to me it shows that the ps3 is quite good and so is the xbox but i prefer the ps3 i have it and i have the xbox 360 but their both awesome , i think they match in terms of graphic now to the controller's i think the ps3 is better and didn't copy the home button or the motion senser but their both awesome and now for the hdmi port i say ps3's is more powerful and the blue ray gives a better graphic but their both Awesome ! i should know i have both of them
I have seen like a Dozen posts on the PS3 and I keep seeing people who are completely ignorant about the systems..... The main provcessor in both the xbox and ps3 is a varient of the IBM cell processor, 3 for xbox, and 7 for PS3, the 360 has 512 MB UMA (shared access for CPU and GPU), 10MB eDRAM embedded video memory, and the ps3 has 256 MB XDR, 256 MB video memory, so really, the xbox only has 10 mor meg memory, and if you think that makes a huge difference compared to the 4 more cores your insane... The PS3 is hands down the winner in power as the total tflops for the 360 is 1, and its 2 for the ps3... Also some idiot said the main CPU was 700 MHZ? Pull your head out of your a** its 3.2ghz for both systems, and the GPU is 500MHZ ATI vs 550 nvidia... Now since I am typing this from memory, there is always a chance I could be wrong, I mean I own both systems, I remember getting the stats from a legit source but, my memory isn't what it used to be... Please check your facts.

Hello all!
actually, that's brilliant. Thank you. I'm going to pass that on to a couple of people.
