PS3 controls gone bad

When it was announced that the Playstation 3 controller, since dubbed 'SIXAXIS', had motion controls, many yelled "Foul" at Sony for what many gamers felt was a cheap rip-off of Nintendo's Wii controller.

Sadly, it doesn't look like the motion sensing components of the PS3 are going to be put to good use. As you can see above in the screenshot, this is how you will play Virtua Tennis 3 on the PS3. Sega just wants people to think that their motion sensing controller is a good idea, but this is just dumb, and its going to be more complicated than anything to try and control the characters on the screen tilting the controller everywhich way. The controller could have been put to good use, but this just looks, sadly, too complicated. You are not emulating what it is like to play tennis, you are just swinging the controller forwards and backwards.

With the Wii controller, you just whack the controller against the air, just like a real tennis racket, and your character on the screen will do the same, but with the PS3 controller, you push the controller forward, and backwards. Is this really necessary? If you can't do it right, then just don't try. People were wondering if the Wii would exhaust the gamer, it looks like the same question will be asked for the Playstation 3.

We presume that Virtua Tennis 3 players will also have the ability to play the game the 'old fashion' way by just pressing the buttons and moving around the analogue stick. If you can't, then this game is sure to be the first most frustrating game on the PS3. We'll have to wait and see what its like. But from what it looks like, this isn't going to be an easy game to play. But.. well... it unique alright.

Whats next? God of War where you make Kratos attack by tilting the controller sideways and then pulling it upwards? Hopefully a game will come along at some point that will make good use of the motion sensing features, the same goes for the Wii.

as someone who's tried them all... don't bother getting a ps3

    1) it was Segas idea to use motion sensing in their game, not Sony's
    2) You havn't tried it out yet so don't bash it
    3) Its optional, you don't have to use it.

    Slight correction to the article..

In actual fact it appears (based on the first reviews of Nintendo's own tennis and other sports games being released at launch with the Wii) that in actual fact when you simply move the controller *expecting* your character to mimic your movements on screen, the Wii actually ignores you a large precentage of the time...

The PS3 is a load of shit!!!,

WTF, motion sensors just a couple of months before launch!!!,

I don't care about motions sensors working or not, I don't want to play the games supporting it.

I'll get a PS3 when Metal Gear Solid 4 will come out.

I'm getting PS3.. having a super computer as my games console and my desktop PC will be very cool.

Saying motion control and the ability to move the controller to cause game action is a Wii invention and a PS3 rip off is wrong. I remember back in the PS1 days having a 3rd party controller that had this function built into it. Very few games took use of it but any type of racing game or flight sim it was awesome.

Lol yeah I feel sorry for ppl trying to use the ps3 as a pc on an older tv haha low def blur-out to the max. I'll stick with what i got thanks. Oh yes and i gotta say, Love the design of the ps3 controller!! Lol Sony never fails to amaze me with their originality. Man i better not say to much more. Better leave it for other posts lol

Suprised? No. From what I remember, not even some of the in-house devs knew this was happening, so anything they try will be just tacked onto an existing control scheme rather than worked in. Come back for Virtua Tennis 6, and you'll probably get something more sensible

Wow I am so sorry for Playstating Fans. I cant believe anyone wwould buy this garbage.

LMAO! And to believe Canadian gamers will have to pay nearly 1000$ for the PS3 and 2 games

Yeah I'm going to take a poo on the PS3. It sucks and the SIXAXIS is a sick joke.

That looks like some real good tennis to be had there based on the diagrams. Hilarious.

The PS3 controller is NOT adding anything new, they are just removing things.
What I mean is there was already an input ie: the buttons and thumbsticks, so the input has only "changed" to tilt/rotation, nothing new added per say. What does it matter if you tilt the controller or press the thumbstick forward, it all does the same thing.
What was not good is the removal of the vibration. This actually removes you from the depth of the gameplay..... sad.

What a load of horse shit. You don't have to swing your controller in the same way you do a tennis racket. The motions are the same as what the PS3 controller does. I can flick my wrist and swing my baseball bat, wack a tennis ball and put a the golfball in the hole. I can lay down on the couch and move my nintendo controller ever so slightly and swing my sword. It's the same garbage that is in the ps3 controller. It just goes to show you how shitty this 'motion tracking' system is when Sony can slap it in on their system in no time. Don't try and argue that it's up to the player to use the controller like a racket, because the same can be said for any game controller. It's all bogus and anyone who thinks that a gimick is a revolution needs to take a second and think about where the future of video games is heading.

The PS3 control is great. It doesn't require you to use the sixaxis if you don't want to. so for you people who don't like that function, don't use it. I myself love it. A lot of games have utilized this function and used
it in great ways. Such as Heavenly Sword - being able to guide your arrow that you shot through the air
and get that perfect head shot. Call
Of Duty 3 - Hitting an enemy with the but of your gun by moving the control like you were really hitting him with it and many more.
I'm not biased either, I have a 360 and a PS3 and i choose PS3. I could go on but unless you have really
tested them both and not just played them then you can't make a true judgment. And i'm not paying for online play with XBOX Live any more. Go PS3.
